Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

TMS through NeuroStar is a FDA approved non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to treat major depressive disorder (MDD).

How it works:
An electromagnetic coil is placed on the scalp, and short magnetic pulses are directed to an underactive part of the brain to improve symptoms. The patient remains awake during the treatment and typically hears a clicking sound and feels a tapping sensation.

Benefits: Effective for those who have been diagnosed with MDD and haven't responded to other types of treatment like medication and/or psychotherapy. Up to two-thirds of people with depression have seen improvement, even when other therapies were not effective. No anesthesia or downtime.

Side effects:
Mild headaches or scalp discomfort are the most common. Other less common side effects include facial twitching or fatigue. The risk of seizures is rare.

Important consideration:

TMS is not suitable for individuals with certain metals/implants in their head or those with a history of seizures.

TMS treatment consists of 36 sessions, 5x a week for 20-30 minutes in office.

  • Must be 15yrs or older
  • Covered by most insurances
  • Fully covered by Tricare
  • Bi-polar disorder not qualified for treatment
